They might well blame the crisis, but AU and Sharp are releasing only one model in this Summer 2013 collection, the SHL22, a high end smartphone.

The Aquos Phone Serie SHL22 is one of the two smartphones Sharp are releasing this year that have the new IGZO LCD display technology, the other one being DoCoMo's Aquos Phone Zeta SH-06E, SoftBank apparently not interested in it.

The Aquos Phone Serie SHL22 comes with a 4.9-inch display with HD (1280 x 720 pixels) resolution, an 1.7 GHz quad-core processor (Snapdragon 600 APQ8064T), 2 GB of RAM and 16 GB of ROM (expandable by SDXC cards).

The main camera is 13.1 megapixels, adopting Sharp's latest F 1.9 BrightEye technology, and the sub camera is 2.1 MP.

Like the 206SH Xx by SoftBank, the SHL22 comes with the "Sweep ON" and "Shake OFF" gesture functionality for turning the phone on and off. Also featured are the so called "Finger Step & Voice Awake" - allowing you to tap the back of the phone in OFF state to start the voice launcher to run an application of your choice.

What makes the SHL22 stand apart from other smartphones released in Japan is the "voice feedback" feature of the UI where various sound effects - professional acoustic tuned sounds - have been added to complement the various movements in the UI, performed by the IDE Sound Institute.

This Aquos Phone Serie, unlike most other AU phones, will utilize all radio frequency bands: LTE (800/1500/2100MHz), CDMA2000 (800/2100MHz), W-CDMA (850/1900/2100MHz), GSM (850/900/1800/1900MHz), making it compatible with most carriers worldwide, and will actually have a microSIM slot.

All other standard features are present too: wi-fi (a/b/g/n + the latest ac standard), Bluetooth 4.0, infrared, OneSeg TV (while Softbank and Docomo boast FullSeg), mobile wallet (NFC-compatible), waterproof (IPX5/IPX8) and dustproof (IP5X), 3.5 mm audio jack.

While the IGZO tech should significantly improve battery life, Sharp have decided to make assurance double sure by adding a 3080 mAh battery.

The SHL22 weighs 155 grams and measures 142 × 70 × 9.9mm. It is available in black, blue and white. The OS is Android 4.2.

I don't think rooting will help.
I have never before seen an AU KDDI phone so I'm afraid I don't know how to add a new APN.
