Spring is here! Well, maybe in Japan... Because AU KDDI have just announced their Spring 2014 collection, where Sharp makes an appearance with a tablet (SHT22) and a phone dubbed the Aquos Phone Serie mini SHL24, where "mini" stands to show the 4.5 inch display is, well, mini.

The Aquos Phone Serie mini SHL24 is a member of the EDGEST family launched by Sharp for SoftBank in the Winter 2013 collection, boasting one the world's thinnest bezels or alotting the screen 75% the device's surface. It is indeed a mini phone, measuring 124 mm x 63 mm x 9.9 mm (10.3 mm thickest part where the camera is), weighing just 115 grams.

The SHL24 comes with a 4.5 inch (mini!) display utilizing Sharp's amazingly energy-efficient IGZO LCD tech which should be able to give your phone more than 24 hours of battery life with one charge. Some users are already reporting between 2 and 5 full days (!) with their earlier IGZO models, such as the SH-02E, and we sure hope the new generation fares even better than the old one.

The screen resolution is, of course, full HD 1080p, which amounts to 487 ppi display density. The screen is compliant with the HSV colour space, and can also adjust its image quality according to the environment, e.g. incadescent or fluorescent lighting, time of day, brightness of the surroundings.

To power this beauty Sharp have chosen the quad-core Snapdragon 800 (MSM8974) clocked at 2.2 GHz, aided by 2 GB of RAM. The built-in memory is 16 GB which you can always expand up to 64 GB using SDXC cards.

The SHL24 comes with a 13.1 megapixel camera of the BrightEye family flaunting the world's best F1.9 value for night-time photos on which you can actually see stuff, further refined by NightCatch processing engine guaranteeing less image noise. HDR shotting is available for both photos and videos, and there's 16x digital zoom.

The Aquos Phone Series SHL 24 supports 3G and LTE connectivity, Wi-Fi a/b/g/n/ac, Bluetooth 4.0, has miniUSB and 3.5 mm connectors, and if, of course, waterproof (IPX5/IPX7).

The battery capacity is 2120 mAh.

The phone is available (starting late February 2014) in pink, blue, yellow-green, and white.

The OS version at the time of purchase is Android 4.2, upgrades expected.
