SHV37

The new Aquos U SHV37 is AU's version of Docomo's Aquos Ever SH-02J, and is scheduled for release in late November 2016.

The SHV37 is a mid-range smartphone that comes with a 5-inch IGZO display which guarantees long battery life - and indeed, it is advertised as capable of lasting "three days or more", of course depending on usage. But the screen resolution is the humble HD (1280 x 720 px), and it is equipped, as usual, with Sharp's proprietary backlight and colour filter S-PureLED.

The installed battery is 2700 mAh, so the 3+ days promise is easily kept.

The SHV37 comes with an octacore Snapdragon 430 (MSM8937) processor having 4 x 1.4 GHz and 4 x 1.1 GHz cores. Just 2 GB of RAM, which, considering the preinstalled and non-removable carrier bloatware, means you'll only get 500-600 MB of free RAM on this phone. The built-in memory is rather limited as well, to 16 GB, and given that you can't install apps on the external memory, the ability to use microSDXC cards of up to 256 GB is of little use.

Design-wise the Aquos U SHV37 has the same boring iPhone-copycat appearance that was introduced in the Summber 2016 collection. The 2.5D Corning® Gorilla® Glass 4 screen isn't anything impressive either.

The main camera is 13.1 megapixels, F2.2 (why? what happened to the F1.9 sensors?), HDR-capable, Night Catch II - but I very much doubt this will be able to measure up to the F1.9 sensors. The camera supports 4K continuous shooting, fireworks shooting mode (introduced in the Summer 2016 collection), Capture later (extract frame from 4K video), and the familiar Framing Advisor to guide you to accomplish better photo compositions (it does help). The inner camera has a 5-MP, wide-angle camera lens (22 mm focal length equivalent) with features such as Beautiful Skin Correction, Lens Correction, Hand Mirror, and self-timer.

The SHV37 is waterproof and dustproof (IPX5 / IPX8 / IP6X).

While both Felica and NFC are supported, the SHV37 is perhaps the first Japanese Sharp phone that supports neither Full Seg, nor One Seg digital television.

It also features the latest version (5.0) of Sharp AI assistant, Emopa, and the Hikari Emotion LED/graphics - illumination in 9 colours and 12 patterns.

Connectivity options cover LTE + WiMax, including VoLTE, Wi-Fi b/g/n (2.4 GHz only), Bluetooth 4.2, but no Infrared. The supported frequencies are as follows:
LTE: 800 MHz, 2 GHz, and WiMax 2+. AU's WorldWing service includes 3G/GSM frequencies but these are not specifically listed. Judging from the frequency band for earlier models, further support should exist for LTE 1.7 GHz, and 3G 2.0 GHz.

The Aquos U SHV37 measures 143 × 71 × 8.3 mm, weighs 137 grams.

Design-wise, a "two-tone colour" approch has been adopted with different front and back colours, separated by a bruched aluminium frame. The colour combinations are lime & gold, platinum & white, pink & powder, and metal & black.
