To be released in mid-February 2018 is a new member of the Aquos sense series: the Aquos sense basic. This is advertised as a business-oriented smartphone.

The "basic" tag in the name signals two substantial changes from the other Aquos sense devices. First, this device will ship with plain Android – 8.0 Oreo – instead of the traditional heavily customised platform we find on all other phones. In this respect, the Aquos sense basic reminds of the Android One line, only it has somewhat better specifications.

And second, the Aquos sense basic comes with a standard 5-inch full-HD IGZO display unlike the other phones in the series, which have an HDR-compatible LCD that employs Sharp's Rich Color Technology Mobile, "inherited" from Aquos TVs, to ensure colour reproduction corresponding to the DCI digital cinema standard, covering 90% of the colour gamut. Still, it should offer satisfactory views and comfortable use due to the in-cell-touch technology that guarantees perfect responsiveness even when the screen is wet.

The Aquos sense basic, exactly like the standard version, is powered by a Snapdragon 430 (MSM8937) processor that has four 1.4-GHz cores and four 1.1-GHz cores. The operating memory is 3 GB, and the built-in storage space is 32 GB (maximum supported expansion is 256 GB using microSDXC cards).

It has the same cameras – a 13.1-megapixel rear shooter with software image stabilisation and a 5-megapixel front-facing camera. The official announcement does not mention if the main camera can capture the same 120 still images in one second as the standard model's. The camera's aperture size should be the same as in the other members of the Aquos sense family: f/2.2 for both the rear and front camera, both equipped with shake reduction.

The Aquos sense basic supports the following radio frequencies:
LTE (4G): 900 MHz, 1.7 GHz, 1.9 GHz, 2.1 GHz + 2.5 GHz AXGP (in Japan only).
UMTS (3G): 900 MHz, 1.9 GHz, 2.1 GHz.
GSM: 900 MHz, 1800 MHz, 1900 MHz.

Further connectivity options include Bluetooth 4.2, Wi-Fi b/g/n at 2.4 GHz only, but no infrared, and no digital television or Osaifu-Keitai e-wallet.

The Aquos sense basic is waterproof (IPX5/IPX8), dustproof (IP6X), and impact-resistant (MIL-STD-810G).

It measures 72 (W) x 144 (H) x 8.5 (D) mm and weighs approx. 144 grams.

The Aquos sense basic is only offered in two colours: black and white, like a true basic business-targeted device.
