Alongside the high-end Aquos R2, Softbank have also announced the next iteration of their smartphone targeted at the elderly, the Simple Smartphone 4. As the name suggests, this is a low-end simplified smartphone whose idea is to facilitate use, not impress with cutting-edge specs.
The Simple Smartphone 4 comes with a 5.0-inch screen with a resolution of 1280 x 720 px, built utilising Sharp's IGZO technology that guarantees very long battery life. The battery capacity is 2800 mAh, which should easily squeeze at least 3–4 days of use on a single charge.
The phone comes with easy on-screen settings to adjust brightness, contrast, and saturation so that maps and text are made easier to read. The user interface design is simple and clean, the icons large, and the font size big.
Also featured are services such as "Easy Link" for registering up to 3 frequently used contacts, "Triple Clearly Talk" for easy hearing of conversations in noisy places, and "Emergency Buzzer". The second feature is achieved using the Enhanced Voice Services (EVS) codec that improves upon VoLTE for even higher sound quality – obviously extremely important for elderly users.
The device is also, expectedly, protected from water ingress (IPX5/8), dust ingress (IP6X) and is impact-resistant (MIL-STD-810G).
The Simple Smartphone 4 has a 13.1-megapixel rear camera and a 5-megapixel front camera.
It has three dedicated hardware buttons to launch voice search, phone and mail, and return to the home screen.
It is powered by a low-end Snapdragon 430 processor that has four 1.4 GHz cores and four 1.1 GHz cores. The amount of RAM is 3 GB (should be plenty) and the built-in memory is 32 GB (can be expanded using microSDXC cards).
Supported radio frequencies include:
TD-LTE: 2500 (B41) MHz
AXGP (TD-LTE): 2500 (B41 (B41) MHz, 1700 (B2) / 1800 (B3) / 1700 (B4) / 900 ) MHz
W-CDMA: 2100 (I) / 1900 (II) / 1700 (IV) / 900 (VIII) MHz
GSM: 1900/1800/900 MHz.
Further connectivity options include Bluetooth 4.2 and Wi-Fi (b/g/n at 2.4 GHz). OneSeg digital TV is also featured.
The Softbank Simple Smartphone 4 will be offered in silver, navy, and pink colours once released in late July 2018.
