The Aquos sense3 plus will also be sold by SoftBank, under model name 901SH, as part of their Winter 2019/2020 collection, with sales scheduled to begin in December 2019.

The Aquos sense3 plus is slightly larger than the Aquos sense3 basic/lite – adding half an inch to its 5.5" display, and has a greater resolution of course: 2220 x 1080 px. The display is an IGZO but not the 120 Hz type found on the flagship devices. Still, it equals or beats any other manufacturer's display in terms of energy-saving and sensitivity. The Rich Color Technology Mobile developed from Aquos TVs is used to ensure bright and colourful images.

To further enhance viewing experience, Dolby Atmos®-compatible stereo speakers for Hi-Res audio have been installed on the device, one on the top edge and one on the bottom.

A mid-range device after all, the Aquos sense3 plus is powered by a Snapdragon 636 octa-core processor and has 6 GB of operating memory (LPDDR4x). There's plenty of onboard storage with 128 GB ROM. Storage can be expanded by up to 512 GB using microSDXC cards.

This is Sharp's first non-flagship phone to feature two rear cameras: one "standard" 12.2-megapixel camera with aperture size of f/1.8 and 76° focal length, high-speed auto-focus, electronic image stabilisation and subject-blur correction capability. The second camera has a 13.1-megapixel super-wide-angle (123°) sensor with f/2.4 aperture, electronic image stabilisation, subject-blur correction. Both cameras can create Sharp's last year's flagship innovation, AI Live Story, where the artificial intelligence image processor automatically composes a short video clip of the best frames captured while shooting.

Selfie-maniacs don't have much to drool over: the inner camera has an 8-megapixel sensor that is wide-angle (80°) and has an f/2.2 aperture size.

Connectivity-wise, the Aquos sense3 plus has everything you could want: support for all Wi-Fi speed standards (a/b/g/n/ac), Bluetooth 5.0, Osaifu-keitai/NFC, face authentication, fingerprint authentication.

Supported radio frequencies include:
LTE (FDD): 2100 (B1) / 1900 (B2) / 1800 (B3) / 1700 (B4) / 900 (B8) / 850 (B5) / 800 (B18 / B19) / 700 (B12 / B17 / B28) MHz,
LTE (TDD): 2500 (B41 / AXGP) MHz,
W-CDMA: 2100 (I) / 1900 (II) / 1700 (IV) / 900 (VIII) / 850 (V) / 800 (VI / XIX) MHz,
GSM: 1900/1800/900/850 MHz

This is a rather tall phone, measuring 160 x 75 x 8.7 mm (H x W x D), and not particularly light-weight with its 175 grams.

Unlike the earlier Aquos sense and Aquos sense2 models, where the back cover is aluminium but with a surface coat of paint, which means they are prone to scratching and peeling, the Aquos sense 3 employs alumilite dyeing for the aluminium back cover – the metal itself is dyed – guaranteeing no peeling, hipping of paint or discolouration.

The colour variations for the Aquos sense3 plus 901SH are: moon blue, black, white, and pink (the last one being limited to SoftBank).

Initially launched with Android 9, the Aquos sense3 plus received an upgrade to Android 10 on 27 July 2020. The upgrade to Android 11 rolled out on 7 July 2021.
