Working with emerging Japanese data operator, EMOBILE, Sharp made another Windows Mobile 5 device for the operator's market debut, the EM ONE, model name S01SH. Released in May 2007, the device has a 4.1 inch WVGA (800 x 480 px) Mobile Advanced Super View (ASV) display, boasting the impressive 160° viewing angles in all directions. The EM ONE is the first and only WM5 device to have this high a resolution – it is only supported as of WM6 – but was made possible over a special collaboration project between Sharp and Microsoft.
The EM ONE is powered by a Marvell® PXA 270 processor clocked at 520 MHz, has a discrete video graphics accelerator by NVIDIA, the GoForce 5500, 128 MB of RAM, and 512 MB of onboard storage (390 MB user-accessible), expandable using microSD cards of up to 2 GB.
Connectivity options include: HSDPA/W-CDMA (1.7 GHz) – no voice communication, only data, Wi-Fi b/g, Bluetooth 1.2, OneSeg TV tuner. Wi-Fi only works if the EMOBILE USIM card is inserted (any SIM card with a SoftBank-compatible HyperSIM atached will also do).
The EM ONE has a set of quite powerful stereo speakers on each side of the display.
A 1.3-megapixel camera is also installed that supports a manual (hardware) switching to macro mode. The camera can also record video in the WMV format (320 × 240 or QVGA).
The EM ONE measures 70 x 140 x 18.9 millimetres and weighs 250 grams.
To me the most impressive feature of the EM ONE is its dual-slide keyboard. Beside the standard QWERTY keyboard that is revealed when you slide it out and down, which also has 6-directional navigation cursor and a mouse-button above it, they keyboard can also slide out to the right, only revealing the navigation cursor and mouse button. The large 4.1-inch screen also allows the user to use his fingers – I've barely used the stylus. And there's also a scroller wheel for fast scrolling of content on the right edge of the device that's accessible without opening the keyboard. This is the most comfortable hardware keyboard arrangement I have ever seen. If Shap would release a modern upgraded version of the EM ONE, I'd be the first to buy it.
