The Galapagos 005SH is the QWERTY keyboard version of the the 003SH model of the world's first glasses-free 3D capable handset series. The 005SH started selling on Softbank Japan in late February 2011.

The device comes with a 3.8-inch WVGA (800 x 480 px) capacitative touch screen and an 8-megapixel CMOS wide-angle 29mm camera that can shoot 720p HD videos and 3D photos. The Galapagos image processing can transform existing 2D photos into 3D.

A number of 3D games come preloaded on the device for a unmatched gaming experience: Mega Man, Ghosts‘n Goblins: Gold Knights, and Resident Evil: Degeneration.

The Galapagos 005SH, like the 003SH, is powered by a 1 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S2 (MSM8255) processor and an Adreno 205 graphics processing unit (GPU), has 512 MB of RAM (about 120 MB available to the user), and originally came with Android 2.2 (in November 2011, the upgrade to Android 2.3.4 rolled out) with Sharp's custom built UI called TapFlow. It is naturally equipped with a Wi-Fi b/g/n, a Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR and a GPS antenna. Up to 32 GB microSDHC memory cards can be used on the Sharp Galapagos (sold with a 16 GB card). The built-in storage (ROM) is advertised by some sources as 1 GB and as 512 BM by others, but in effect, the device storage manager shows "240 MB used / 156 MB free" on my own device.*

The battery capacity is 1130 mAh.

Traditionally available for Japanese users is the Mobile wallet for contactless payment (FeLiCa) and One-Seg digital TV tuner. For the Hi-Fi listening fans the Galapagos comes with a BOSE MIE2 mobile headset for a true experience - but only on a number of promotional items.

The Galapagos 005SH supports W-CDMA (3G) and GSM system (900/1800/1900MHz). It can be used outside of Japan using a hypersim and carrier internet can be used because the Android platform allows the input of alternative APNs. **

It weighs 151 grams and measures 62 x 121 x 12 millimetres.

* After perfroming a full data reset (Settings > Privacy > Reset all data) you will get 310 MB free. You will lose the preinstalled 3D games but you can easily get them back here.

** Internet connectivity when using the 005SH outside of Japan depends on the type of hypersim you are using. Generally, almost all hypersims will let the phone connect to the GSM network and use EDGE data. In my case, the speed varies between 40 and 71 kbps for download and 40 to 68 kbps for upload. Most hypersims will let you connect to the 3G network but you will probably lose incoming calls. For more information, read this article.
