An upgraded version of the Aquos sense6, called Aquos sense6s, model number SHG07, has been announced by Japanese carrier AU and its subsidiary UQ Mobile. On 16 June 2022, it was released by subsidiary J:COM MOBILE, too.

The display in the sense6s is the same 6.1-inch IGZO OLED with a resolution of 2432 x 1080 pixels. It employs 10-bit sampling and is capable of displaying 1 billion colours, something that we previously only found in flagship phones from the Aquos R and the Aquos zero series. It is also Sharp's first midrange phone to feature the IGZO OLED, which was introduced in the Aquos zero2. The Aquos sense6s display also comes with a 120 Hz refresh rate, 1300 nit brightness, and 1300:1 native contrast.

There is no change in the camera setup either: the Aquos sense6s has three cameras that use the ProPix 3 image quality engine found on the Aquos R6:

a standard camera with a 48 MP sensor, aperture f/1.8, wide-angle 79°, focal length equivalent 26 mm, electronic image stabilisation;

a wide-angle camera with an 8 MP sensor, aperture f/2.4, ultra-wide-angle 120°, focal length equivalent 15 mm, electronic image stabilisation;

a telephoto camera with an 8 MP sensor, aperture f/2.4, telephoto 45°, focal length equivalent 53 mm, electronic image stabilisation.

The inward-facing camera has an 8-megapixel sensor with aperture f/2.0, wide-angle 78°, focal length equivalent 26 mm, no image stabilisation.

The amount of RAM installed in the Aquos sense6s is still 4 GB and the ROM is, you guessed it, still 64 GB.

The energy-saving IGZO OLED technology, along with the same 4570 mAh battery should ensure one week of use on a single charge, estimated on 1 hour usage per day and 23 hours stand-by.

So, what is different then? It's the processor: the Snapdragon 690 5G has been replaced with a Snapdragon 695 5G. Sharp say that the new platform has improved performance by about 12% and GPU performance by about 35% to ensure smoother graphics and be able to play more demanding games.

Despite the relatively big battery capacity and dispaly size, Sharp have managed to reduce the phone's thickness by 11% (compared to the Aquos sense5) to 7.9 mm, the width being 70 mm and the height 152 mm. The Aquos sense6s weighs 156 grams, exactly like the Aquos sense6, which is (much) better than all rivals.

Face and fingerprint recognition are now standard features, just as water- and dust-proofing, and Osaifu-Keitai/NFC.

The Aquos sense6s offers support for Hi-Res audio, incl. wireless, Qualcomm's aptX Adaptive, and LDAC for a high-quality listening experience.

Supported radio-frequencies include:

5G: n28 / n77 / n78
LTE: B1 / B2 / B3 / B5 / B12 / B17 / B18 / B19 / B38 / B41 / B42
3G: B1 / B2 / B5
GSM: 850/900 / 1,800 / 1,900 MHz

The Aquos sense6s is expected to reach the shelves on 28 April 2022. Even though the Aquos sense6 SHG05 received an upgrade to Android 12 on 24 March 2022, the upgraded Aquos sense6s is released running Android 11, too. Why?

Both the AU by KDDI and the UQ Mobile variats are available in the same colours as before: light copper, silver, and black. Externally, the Aquos sense6s looks exactly the same as its predecessor, the Aquos sense6.
